University of Kelaniya

The University of Kelaniya was founded in 1875 as a centre of learning for Buddhist monks. After it was come University of Kelaniya in 1978. The University of Kelaniya is one of the major national universities. It is located just outside the municipal limits of Colombo, in the ancient and historic city of Kelaniya, on the north bank of the Kelani River. It has two major campuses, seven locations, six faculties and four institutions.

It has a modern and multi cultural structure and perspective with the Faculties of Science, Medicine, Social Science and Commerce and Management and including the teaching of Chinese, English, French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Russian, Tamil languages and modern linguistics.

It has a vision, a mission and a motto.

Aggamaha Saddhammajothika Dhaja, Tripitaka Vagishvaracharya, Upadhyaya Dhurandara, Mahopadaya, Pandith, the most Venerable Welamityawe Dharmakirthi Sri Kusala Dhamma Thero is the Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya.

Prof.D.M.Semasinghe is the Vice-Chancellor and Senior Prof.Lakshman Senevirathne is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya.

University of Kelaniya has seven faculties there are

*Faculty of Graduate Studies

It has many facilities to the students such as library facility, hostel facility etc. 

It provides Extra-Curricular Activities &Student support services

such as student counselling service, kalana mithuru sevana, career guidance unit, medical centre, physical education, cultural certre, arts council, centre for gender studies, International student affairs unit, research council, communication & media unit, Newsletter-University of Kelaniya, Security section-University of Kelaniya, Marshals,Centre for Distance and Continuing Education(CDCE) and Centre for Sustainability Solution(CSS)

Medical Service provides many services.There are Dental service, Pharmacy service, Health service and so on.

The Department of physical education also provides a lots of benefits for the students. It is to promote and improve the students sporting activities. It provides opportunities to develop team and individual sports.
